This section will include articles on different aspects of life in Dallington over the centuries.
There is a great deal of fascinating social history in the book by Karen Bryant-Mole “Dallington: Six Miles from Everywhere” – full details on the Resources page. By generous permission of Karen and her family, an electronic version of the text is now available on the Resources page, making it more accessible for anyone wishing to research their family or local history.
See also the website of The High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty http://www.highweald.org which contains resources about the history of the area, including a guided walk prepared for the local primary school.

I’ve just been getting round to looking at my dad’s war time notes a bit more closely and notice that his class (4D) of Addey and Stanhope School was first evacuated to Dallington. He’s written on the back of an old postcard of Yew Arch (complete with period vehicle out front) “I was billeted here (with Reg Norris) in 1939/40 – Mrs Tutton, Mrs Bridges, maid Lena”. I see that the Tuttons are mentioned in ‘Dallington A Village At War’. Happy to send a scan of the postcard if wanted.
Thanks John (and fascinated to hear about the Addey & Stanhope connection as it was just along the road from us when we lived in New Cross). Yes please do send a scan (both sides if possible) and are you happy for me to publish it on the website?
I’ve put the postcard on Dropbox at https://www.dropbox.com/s/d5oi4mzmudhz5w2/dallington_yewtree.jpg?dl=0
Not a large file but easier that way (note: no need to create an account). There’s no publisher or any other info on the reverse, just dad’s notes. Hpapy for you to use on the site.
My dad grew up in New Cross, in Waller Road. More about him on my site at https://www.cutlock.co.uk/2015/08/19/arthur-r-howes-1926-to-2015/
That’s amazing – we lived at 127 Waller Road from 1972 to 1986 and my children went to Edmund Waller School. What a small world! Thanks for the photo. Best wishes Pauline
Copying over a previous message from April 14, 2013 by Jenny about EVACUEES “My father was evacuated to Dallington during the second World War. The details are quite sketchy, but I know that he attended the local school and stayed on a farm. I would love to take him on a trip down memory lane and come to visit. If anyone has any information on what farm this may have been, I would be really grateful.
o [editor]: Hi Jen – if you give your father’s name, someone may remember him. There were still quite a few farms in Dallington during the war, so you may need more information to narrow it down.
